CYBISTER explanatus (beetle)

Age: Pleistocene

Formation: Rancho La Brea Tar

 Location: Kern County, California

The Rancho la Brea has yielded many fossils, plants and animals. Most of them date from - 40,000 to - 12,000 years ago

The presence of bitumen pits has made it possible to discover animals preserved in this material.  Asphalt (colloquially called tar) slowly rose to the earth's surface in this region over a period of tens of thousands of years, forming hundreds of sticky pools that trapped animals and plants that had committed recklessness  to venture there.  Over time, the asphalt fossilized their remains. The result is an incredibly rich collection of fossils dating from the Wisconsin Ice Age.
